Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha saw a slight rise at the box office on Sunday, but not enough. The film earned Rs 9.85- 10.65 crore as per initial estimates, taking the total on day four to Rs 38.75 crore. This is a 15 per cent increase compared to Saturday, but for a film with an impressive star cast and a big budget, despite doing well in multiplexes, it is a tremendous performance. The film was rejected in the mass belt.
Laal Singh Chaddha’s box office collection, after a weekend of 5 days, is expected to drop below Rs 50 crore, which will be the lowest for an Aamir Khan film in the last 10 years. To give a perspective, the actor’s dud, Thugs Of Hindostan earned Rs 52 crore on the first day. Reportedly, the film was released with 10,000 shows along with Akshay Kumar’s Raksha Bandhan. However, hundreds of shows were called for cancellation after seeing less footfall.
Several reasons can be attributed to this lackluster performance, including mixed reviews and calls for boycotts ahead of the film’s release. Nevertheless, Bollywood celebrities have extended support and urged fans to go and watch the show. Hrithik Roshan tweeted, “Just saw Laal Singh Chaddha. I felt the heart of this film. Plus and minus aside, this movie is just fantastic. Don’t miss this gem guys! Go ! Go now watch it. It’s beautiful. just beautiful.”
Filmmaker Hansal Mehta also shared his review of the film, “Saw #LaalSinghChaddha. It is a very engaging film made with passion and love. Maybe a little too emotionally and politically too superficial for my taste, but a film made with so much care, heart and honesty. It deserves to be successful. So much to admire.” In another tweet, he wrote, “But the truth is that for a large part of the film I found myself either with moist eyes or smiling. Watch #LaalSinghChaddha. Stop spreading malaria.” Farhan Akhtar and Huma Qureshi also praised the film.
